December 7 road icing threat: KY/WV/OH

Update 12:14AM Tuesday, (Posted via Office from Charleston, WV):
Just another update to this post. Three deaths resulted from the icy road outbreak in Kentucky yesterday.

Update 4:21PM Monday, (Posted via Office from Charleston, WV):
Charleston once again avoided problems today, thanks to the sun helping us climb above the freezing mark prior to the onset of snowfall. Radar showed some heavier and more persistent banding north of town, so I headed up I-79 to investigate. Some of the bridges were partially coated and a little slick, but I found no serious problems and no crashes. Accidents were reported on I-77 at about this time, but I don't know yet if those were bridge ice related.

It appears that the icing threat validated in Ohio, with Cincinnati experiencing a subfreezing snow coating prior to morning rush hour. I am waiting to hear if any reports come in from other areas.

Update 9:46AM Monday, (Posted via Laptop from Charleston, WV):
Snow has started here in town. Very light so far, but looks like heavier band is upstream. Flakes are melting on contact on the guardrail here on Fort Hill, which means we are above freezing at least up here. Likely due to the filtered sunlight we received earlier. This will thankfully be a short duration event, I expect to be done with this within the hour.

Update 8:10AM Monday, (Posted via BlackBerry from Dunbar, WV):
Have not seen any obs reporting freezing rain yet, so it appears that our ptypes will be snow. Some stations have the "unknown precip" indication in southen KY, which can sometimes actually be a sign of ZR. However, everything north of there should be all snow, including here in WV. Cincinnati is in the middle of an icy road outbreak with numerous crashes reported.

Update 7:03AM Monday, (Posted via Office from Charleston, WV):
Traffic cameras show that roads are icy in the Cincinnati metro area. Will be going mobile here shortly.

Update 6:50AM Monday, (Posted via Office from Charleston, WV):
Precip advancing into the area. Low levels are dry, but anywhere that precip reaches the ground will see road icing. Charleston and Huntington will be under the gun soon.

Update 2:17AM Monday, (Posted via Office from Charleston, WV):
Starting to get concerned about a serious road icing threat to central/eastern Kentucky, southern Ohio and all of West Virginia. Temps in the region have plummeted below freezing. Precip moving in from the west has not been waning as models have been suggesting up to this point. It appears that freezing rain and snow will overspread the entire region through this morning, with the potential for a very serious outbreak of icy roads.
