What is the Storm Chaser Database?

The unofficial Storm Chaser Database is a collection of profiles of storm chasers from around the world. Members add and maintain their own information and photos in their profile.
How do I add my listing?
Membership in the database is open to anyone active in the hobby of storm chasing. By this it is preferred that you currently are, or have been at some time, a regular participant in the activity of traveling to intercept storms. To add your listing, visit the Add Profile page and fill out the questionnaire. Unfortunately, if the 'add profile' page is left up for long periods of time, it begins to get exploited by spam bots. For this reason, I normally disable the public form unless a large number of chasers are interested in adding new profiles. If the form is offline and you wish to be a part of the database, I can send you a 'secret' URL to the form where you can add your profile - just send me an email.
How do I update my listing?
You may update your listing by logging into your Editor Account with your PIN number at the Login Page address (provided when you added your entry to the database). You can update your profile as often as you like.
I just added my account but my PIN number doesn't work.
The editor account must be confirmed and added manually by the administrator. You will receive a confirmation email when your editor account is activated. In the meantime, your profile will still show up in the database.
I lost/forgot my PIN!
Send me an email and I'll retrieve your PIN for you.
How do I add/change photos in the database?
The function to upload photos is available after logging into your Editor Account.
My photo(s) don't show up in my profile.
If one or more of your photos are not showing up, check the following:
  • Have you uploaded your photos? Your photos need to be uploaded to the database server in order to display in the profile. You can upload photos after logging into your editor account.

  • Make sure that the filename of the photo you uploaded is exactly the same as the filename you entered in the form. Filenames are case-sensitive. For best results, type the filenames in all lowercase letters without any special characters such as spaces, underscores or dashes.

  • Make sure the filename has a .jpg extension and that the extension is in lowercase letters.

  • If you've uploaded a photo and are unable to get it to display, try renaming it with a different filename and uploading the photo again - remember to enter the new filename on the editor form.
NOTE: The photo uploader utility recently has been assigning wrong permissions to files. The photos will upload successfully, but will not be viewable (403 forbidden error). If this happens to you, send me an email and I will fix it for you.
Many of the profiles are out-of date.
As it is up to the individual member to update their profile, some of the information in the database may be out-of-date. In the future we may stop displaying some of the date-specific information (age, number of tornadoes seen, etc) to keep the information displayed as non-dated as possible.
Many of the profiles don't contain photos or have incomplete information.
It is up to each member as to what information they choose to enter into their profiles. Some may choose to enter only a minimal amount of data and/or may not elect to include any photos. There is no requirement as to how much information is entered into each profile, so if a profile is missing data, it is because that member chose not to enter it.
I don't see certain chasers in the database.
Inclusion in the database is purely voluntary, so if you don't see someone in the database that you feel should be there, it is because he or she hasn't yet added their profile. In other words, no one is excluded from membership. If you feel that a certain chaser should be included, by all means, let them know and encourage them to add their profile.
Are there any known bugs in the database?
There are three minor problems that I'm aware of:
  1. The photo uploader utility recently has been assigning wrong permissions to files. The photos will upload successfully, but will not be viewable (403 forbidden error). If this happens to you, send me an email and I will fix it for you.

  2. Members who have entered a large amount of data in their records may experience hangs when attempting to edit their profile. In these cases the editor may stall briefly, but on certain occasions may not post the updates at all. For the time being, keeping your entries brief (IE, no long paragraphs) may prevent this. If this occurs, email your updates and I will manually add them.

  3. Commas are mysteriously removed from the initial 'Add Entry' page. The editor function does not have this problem, so any commas that were removed in your initial submission may be re-inserted with the editor.
Unfortunately due to time constraints, there are no plans to fix these issues. If you have experience with CGI/Perl database script programming and would be interested in volunteering time to help, let me know.
Privacy and copyright information:
Database members are only required to enter their name in their public database record. All other information and photographs entered into the database is voluntary. Email addresses will be kept private, except for those members who have explicity opted to make an email address public by entering data into the 'public email address' field. For more information, view the database privacy policy.

All photographs submitted by members remain the property of their respective photographers. No photographs may be copied from this site without the express permission of the proper database member.

Please feel free to contact Dan Robinson if you have any other questions or suggestions.
