Mountainside Lightning

The town of Montgomery rests in the Kanawha Valley with steep mountains on either side, and lightning has struck the side of the mountains a surprising number of times. Here a flash traverses the air almost horizontally to hit the mountain north of town. The heavy rain has obscured the mountain from view, but the strike point is visible as an orange glow at the base of the lightning channel. The brown 1982 Buick LeSabre station wagon in the foreground is the vehicle I used to drive when chasing storms. The view is looking northeast from the Family Dollar parking lot.
