Not too far away

If December 21 is the Wednesday of winter, to me February 1 is its Thursday. Only 28 short days of meteorological winter before the "Friday" (March 1) arrives. With January 2009 being a difficult time for our family, it's good to see the turnover to a new month. Regardless of what February throws at us in the way of brutal winter weather, it's easier to deal with knowing that the season will begin a losing battle in a few short weeks.

Last year, I was even out on my first major tornado expedition of 2008 on February 5th. Models don't show much in the way of that same thing happening this year - at least not in the 7 to 10 day horizon. The models have been nothing but a parade of deep troughs and arctic fronts for the last two and a half months - and they've been mostly correct, making for the coldest and snowiest winter since I've been actively following/covering them (since 2003). Although I've always been one to look forward to a few winter events over the course of a season, this one has long passed the threshold of what I'd consider enjoyable. I'm more than ready for green trees, regular 60°F+ highs and thunderstorms.
