Ice storm glazes eastern Appalachians: Ice buildup from freezing rain downs trees, power lines

HICKORY, NC - A prolonged period of freezing rain moved from Georgia and the Carolinas to Virginia on Thursday morning, coating everything in its path with a thick layer of ice. The ice brought down power lines and trees, caused accidents and transformed the landscape into an impressive spectacle.
