2021 Great Plains chase #2 preview: Texas tornadoes, gustnadoes and lightning

(Blog post corrected to refer to this being Plains trip 2 instead of 1, the latter which took place on May 8) My second Great Plains chase of the year is on the books, with a departure on Saturday May 15, and the return home on Thursday, May 20. The trip was a moderate success, with 3 tornadoes and some decent video and still captures. My primary goal was shooting high-speed lightning video at 6,000 FPS. I have three quality captures in that category: two vivid, perfectly-framed daytime negative CGs near Muleshoe, Texas and a nighttime "slow" highly-branched positive CG near Abilene, TX, as well as some useful filler captures of negative leaders.

The big day of the trip was on Monday the 17th, when I witnessed a spectacular supercell that produced a large, long-lived tornado near Forsan, Texas (just southeast of Big Spring), my farthest-south tornado catch to date. I also witnessed 2 other tornadoes with the storm.

The following day (Tuesday the 18th) was a marginal-risk one that nonetheless produced some worthwhile material northwest of Lubbock. Here's a Bridge preview of a portion of a negative CG sequence near Muleshoe, TX:

I also saw a twin dust devil prior to Tuesday's storms, and later some well-defined gustnadoes on the leading edge of the storms' outflow:

Indications are that I will be heading back out on Saturday for another potential week-long trip, so stay tuned!
