Arctic sea ice recovers

The following images are from the University of Illinois cryosphere web site. This first image shows a side-by-side comparison of summertime Arctic sea ice conditions in August of 1980 compared to August of 2007:

This image shows wintertime Arctic sea ice conditions in February of 1980 compared to today (February 2008):

While it's clear that the summertime coverage was dramatically lower last year, it has recovered nearly to normal wintertime coverage this season. It will be very interesting to see if the ice coverage retreats this summer to the extent it did last year.
