Lightning and the New River Gorge Bridge Photo Gallery by Dan Robinson
The New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, WV was for a long time one of my major lightning photo goals. Photogenic thunderstorms become rare as the elevation increases from west to east in the Mountain State, and good chances to capture 'the shot' were elusive, expensive and time consuming. Over the course of seven years, I spent dozens of spring and summer nights down in the Gorge under the bridge (as well as many more short nighttime trips) to attempt to capture the scene I was after. The mountain driving took a toll on my brakes, which twice I had to replace noticeably early as a direct result of the numerous trips from Charleston via Route 60 and Fayette Station Road.
Regardless of all of the effort, gas money and nights sleeping in my truck in the Gorge, only two thunderstorms cooperated with visible lightning over the bridge during those 7 years. These images are the result of that effort. - Dan
