From Dan: How the crime of copyright infringement took $1 million from me and shut down my operation.

In September of 2025, my work is generating the most income it ever has in my career. Yet, I'm being forced to shut down my successul operation, against my will, due to one cause alone: 95% of that revenue is being stolen by piracy and copyright infringement. I've lost more than $1 million to copyright infringement in the last 15 years, and it's finally brought an end to my professional storm chasing operation. Do not be misled by the lies of infringers, anti-copyright activists and organized piracy cartels. This page is a detailed, evidenced account of my battle I had to undertake to just barely stay in business, and eventually could not overcome. It's a problem faced by all of my colleagues and most other creators in the field.

It is with a heavy heart I pass on the sad news of the passing of another one of our own. Susan Strom, longtime friend and fellow lightning photographer/storm chaser from Arizona, lost her battle with cancer on Friday, August 9.

Susan's love for the southwestern Monsoon season, her talented work, her humble demeanor and willingness to help other storm chasers and photographers is well-known in the storm chasing community and around the world. She was one of the first lightning photographers I got to know via the Lightning List in the late 1990s.

Her unfading passion for storms and lightning photography was always evident. She was one of the few that not only remained actively observing through the years, but was always a positive presence in online observer communities. I considered her part of my own close family of storm chaser friends, and her loss will leave a void.

Susan's website is located at lightninglady.com where you can still view her collection of work. Phoenix Magazine did a nice article on her in 2010.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Susan's passing. We have been friends since the mid '80s, but I hadn't seen her in about 10 years. I was planning to visit her in AZ this October. I have such fond memories of her passion for everything - life, photography, kitties, etc. She will be deeply missed. RIP, my friend.
