October 3, 2003 Cold Weather

19 Degrees F: The coldest temperature in the state on Friday, October 3 in Canaan Valley, Tucker County. The rest of the state experienced freezing temperatures with widespread frost. A few low temperature records were either broken or closely approached.

The following is an official public statement from the National Weather Service:

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHARLESTON WV
911 AM EDT FRI OCT 3 2003

HOW COLD WAS IT? FROM PRELIMINARY REPORTS FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NETWORK OF COOPERATIVE OBSERVERS...THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE IN WEST VIRGINIA WAS 19 DEGREES FROM CANAAN VALLEY OF TUCKER COUNTY. LEWISBURG...MARLINTON AND GLADY HAD 21 DEGREES. MOST LOW TEMPERATURES WERE BETWEEN 25 TO 30 DEGREES AT DAWN FRIDAY. FROST WAS WIDESPREAD AWAY FROM RIVERS.

THE 28 DEGREES AT PARKERSBURG WAS A RECORD LOW FOR OCTOBER 3RD IN THAT MID OHIO VALLEY COMMUNITY.

AT CHARLESTON...THE 29 DEGREES WAS THE EARLIEST FREEZING TEMPERATURE IN ALMOST 30 YEARS. BACK IN 1974...A 30 DEGREE READING OCCURRED ON THE 2ND OF OCTOBER.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAID TONIGHT WILL NOT BE NEARLY AS COLD...AS CLOUDS AND RAIN MOVE OUR WAY.
