|An ice storm coats a street sign in downtown St. Louis during the major ice storm of December 1, 2006. Even the arch has a coating of ice and snow on its top. An ice storm is caused by freezing rain, which coats everything on the ground with a glazing of ice. The St. Louis ice storm of 2006 left nearly 500,000 homes without power.
