Spring's Arrival: Ironton, OH and Teays Valley, WV, - March 20, 2003 - 5:30PM to 8:30PM
The first day of spring brought a round of thunderstorms to the Mountain State on this Thursday evening.
EXPEDITION VIDEO: RealVideo, 3MB - Lightning in Ohio and West Virginia on March 20.
The trip started out heading west to the Huntington area where a line of storms was approaching from the southwest. The cells put on a nice show of visible lightning, but the rain and wind soon arrived and necessitated taking down the cameras and heading east. I finally made it out of the rain by Hurricane, WV and was again set up on a hill in Scott Depot, facing southwest at the approaching line. As the storms passed over, rain and a very close lightning strike (the flash reflection and almost instantaneous thunder caught on video) signaled that it was time to pack up.
Lightning continued to flash on the horizon until nearly 9:30 PM as the system finally succumbed to the night.
