Although this tree in Coonskin Park in Charleston, WV had been deteriorating for years when this photo was taken, it is clear that a lightning strike was the direct or indirect cause of the tree's death.
The large patches of bark falling off have erased the original borders of the bark scar, but parallel grooves on the wood mark the spot where the lightning traveled down the tree:
