A blinding power flash (an intense arc from a shorting-out power line) lights up the sky in a St. Louis neighborhood during the major ice storm of December 1, 2006. An ice storm is caused by freezing rain, which coats everything on the ground with a glazing of ice. The tremendous weight of the ice will break tree branches, limbs and power lines - causing widespread power outages and vegetation damage. The St. Louis ice storm of 2006 left nearly 500,000 homes without power.
