From Dan: How the crime of copyright infringement took $1 million from me and shut down my operation.

In September of 2025, my work is generating the most income it ever has in my career. Yet, I'm being forced to shut down my successul operation, against my will, due to one cause alone: 95% of that revenue is being stolen by piracy and copyright infringement. I've lost more than $1 million to copyright infringement in the last 15 years, and it's finally brought an end to my professional storm chasing operation. Do not be misled by the lies of infringers, anti-copyright activists and organized piracy cartels. This page is a detailed, evidenced account of my battle I had to undertake to just barely stay in business, and eventually could not overcome. It's a problem faced by all of my colleagues and most other creators in the field.

Not too far away

If December 21 is the Wednesday of winter, to me February 1 is its Thursday. Only 28 short days of meteorological winter before the "Friday" (March 1) arrives. With January 2009 being a difficult time for our family, it's good to see the turnover to a new month. Regardless of what February throws at us in the way of brutal winter weather, it's easier to deal with knowing that the season will begin a losing battle in a few short weeks.

Last year, I was even out on my first major tornado chase of 2008 on February 5th. Models don't show much in the way of that same thing happening this year - at least not in the 7 to 10 day horizon. The models have been nothing but a parade of deep troughs and arctic fronts for the last two and a half months - and they've been mostly correct, making for the coldest and snowiest winter since I've been actively following/covering them (since 2003). Although I've always been one to look forward to a few winter events over the course of a season, this one has long passed the threshold of what I'd consider enjoyable. I'm more than ready for green trees, regular 60°F+ highs and thunderstorms.
